Woodworking has always been part of my life. My father, Bunji, was a third-generation wooden boat builder in Japan, honored with the National Cultural Merit Award for constructing a 100-foot traditional wooden sailboat. His craftsmanship was extraordinary—his hands could turn raw wood into something divine. But as a father, he was far from perfect. He struggled with alcohol and anger, and my sisters and I often found ourselves seeking shelter under friends’ eaves at night.
I never formally learned boatbuilding from him. Yet somehow, after moving to the United States, I found myself building wooden sailboats for nearly twenty years. People often told me it must be “in my blood.” Maybe they were right. I loved the process—the smell of cedar, the rhythm of planing, the conversation between hand and grain—but it consumed me. Boatbuilding can be a beautiful obsession, but also a costly one. It nearly sank my marriage, my business, and my peace of mind.
Then one day, a gazebo customer showed me a mail-order garden bridge kit she’d bought. It was flimsy, full of tiny parts and fasteners. I looked at it and thought, I can build much better one.
That moment changed everything. It was the birth of SamsGazebos® Japanese Garden Bridges—bridges made with a craftsman’s care, built to bring beauty, balance, and tranquility into people’s gardens.
In the 1980's, long before the internet, I started offering my Japanese garden bridges to local nurseries. Nobody bought them. Still, I believed in the idea. Quality takes time to be seen. Decades later, thanks to the internet, SamsGazebos® handcrafted Japanese garden bridges and structures are now shipped to happy customers around the world.

"Wood is alive. Treat it with respect. Listen as you bend it. When it's ready to yield, nature's masterpiece takes shape in your hands."
My father used to tell me, “Wood is alive—listen to it.”
When I bend an arch or shape a curve, I listen. I ask the wood how far it wants to go, how it wants to move. The secret to beauty lies in that dialogue. Every bridge I build carries that same spirit of respect and harmony.
A garden bridge should be as functional as it is beautiful. Each one I craft has a gentle arch for comfortable walking and a balanced profile that flows naturally into its surroundings. The top rails are hand-bent—not steam-bent—and the tongue-and-groove floorboards fit neatly into curved notches, creating a structure that feels as solid as it looks.
You won’t see many screws or fasteners on a SamsGazebos® garden bridge. The strength is built inside—through hidden joinery and continuous, double-layered top rails that flow seamlessly on posts. The result is natural elegance with enduring strength.
I’m 83 now, and design ideas still come to me like a steady stream. I’ve learned that true design isn’t about trends—it’s about timelessness. Refined, understated, and lasting—that’s my goal with every piece.
I believe good craftsmanship should outlive its maker. Japan’s 1,400-year-old Hōryū-ji temple still stands because of precise joinery and respect for materials. I build my bridges with that same intention: durability through integrity.
Designing something for others to assemble takes a different kind of creativity. Each garden bridge kit comes with two pre-assembled railings. Every piece, every label, every instruction is thoughtfully planned, making setup simple and enjoyable. My goal is a bridge that feels like it almost builds itself.
I only make what I would want in my own garden. My designs might be unique, even a little eccentric—but that’s who I am. I build from instinct, from passion, from love of the craft.
My bridges aren’t mass-produced. Each one is handmade with patience and care, no cutting corners. That’s why most people who buy one can feel the difference the moment they open the box.
The most rewarding part of my work is hearing from customers who share photos of their bridges surrounded by flowers, koi ponds, pets, and families. I may not change the world, but I can bring a little more beauty and peace into it—one garden at a time.
Every day I’m filled with gratitude—for my customers, my family, my team, and the merchants who continue to believe in the value of handcrafted work. This is more than a business to me—It’s a lifelong calling. Thank you for allowing to share a part of that passion with you.

Mix the flowers and plants that thrive in your climate:
Some of my favorites are:
Japanese bridge gardens usually feature bamboos and willows. However bamboos are invasive and require a barrier to contain the roots, don't do well in the dry climate in Southern California.
A rustic wooden torii gate gracefully frames the entrance to your backyard, inviting peaceful contemplation and connection with nature. Japanese torii gate kits from SamsGazebos® work well with the Japanese bridge theme. Wooden Japanese Torii gate kits are available for fast delivery.
Noting soothing more than serene sound of running water. A revolving water wheel gently turns in the pond is a captivating attraction, its rhythmic motion enhances the serene atmosphere, and a great addition to your Japanese bridge theme.
All water wheels from SamsGazebos® include stands, free-standing, and ready to set for your water flow.

Take time to select the right size — it makes all the difference. Keep in mind that a bridge should meet the shore at a right angle. For ponds, choosing a bridge that’s a bit longer than the minimum span will create a more elegant, flowing look. A landscape professional can also help you turn your ideas into a beautiful, balanced design.
For small bridges, use L-post connectors, lag bolts, washers, and wedge anchors to attach the bridge to your concrete base — all of these can be found at your local home improvement store such as Home Depot. Make sure the bridge is perfectly level on both sides for your safety and comfort. Large, commercial-grade bridges should be installed by setting them securely in concrete.
Each SamsGazebos® bridge is treated with an oil-based, semi-transparent brown preservative to protect the wood. To keep your bridge looking beautiful and make upkeep simple, we suggest finishing it with a solid deck stain.
Absolutely! You can now choose railings and end frames finished in vibrant red or tranquil turquoise. We use high-quality, water-based exterior latex paint for lasting color and protection.
